Our Philosophy
Slow Living Hospitality™
Slow Living Hospitality™ is the philosophy at the heart of azulomo. It is a more considered way of creating hospitality, beginning with what matters to people, how they want to feel and what makes a place worth choosing. It isn't about doing everything slowly or offering less. It is about creating with greater intention, meaning and relevance, so that what we offer matters more.
Human Value
We believe hospitality is ultimately about people. A stay can change our pace, bring us closer, give us perspective or simply create space for something we struggle to find in everyday life. Understanding what a guest has really come to find allows us to create experiences with greater emotional value, and emotional value has commercial value too.
Soul & Sense of Place
The soul of a stay cannot be styled into existence. It comes from the relationship between people, place and experience: the landscape outside, the character of a building, local culture, thoughtful design and the small, often invisible details that make somewhere feel considered rather than manufactured. We believe the most memorable stays don't simply exist somewhere. They belong there.
Considered Hospitality
We favour meaning over more, distinction over sameness and intention over excess. That means knowing what to add, but also what to leave alone. Using technology where it genuinely helps. Designing for feeling as well as function. Creating businesses with enough confidence to know who they are for and what they stand for. Because human feeling and commercial intelligence don't compete. The strongest hospitality understands both.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
azulomo is an independent hospitality brand founded by Elke Bretz and the home of Slow Living Hospitality™.
We explore how a deeper understanding of people, place and experience can create hospitality that is not only more meaningful, but more distinctive and commercially valuable.
That thinking comes to life through The Slow Living Hosting Masterclass™, SLOW / an azulomo journal, Founder Essays, research and a growing body of original hospitality thinking and frameworks.
At its heart is one question: How can hospitality become more worth choosing?
-
Slow Living Hospitality™ is the hospitality and business philosophy created by Elke Bretz and developed through azulomo. It is built on a simple idea: the strongest hospitality begins not with what we can offer guests, but with understanding what matters to them.
It starts before the room, the amenity list or the marketing. It asks who the guest is, what has brought them here, what they hope to feel, what they want to take away from the experience and what makes this particular place capable of giving them something they could not find just anywhere.
That understanding becomes the thread running through the whole business, shaping the property and interiors, the experience and sense of place, the photography and story, the way a stay is positioned and priced, the communication around it and the decisions about what to add, improve, protect or deliberately leave alone.
Because when those decisions begin from the same understanding, a stay becomes more coherent, more distinctive and more relevant to the people it is designed for.
Slow Living Hospitality™ connects what matters to people with what creates value for hospitality, because the two were never separate in the first place.
-
azulomo is for people creating and shaping independent hospitality.
That includes holiday-rental owners and hosts, property managers and co-hosts, boutique hotels, guesthouses, retreat operators, hospitality teams and interior designers working within hospitality.
What connects them isn't property type or size. It is ambition. The desire to create somewhere with a stronger identity, a deeper understanding of its guest and a better reason to be chosen.
-
No. Slow Living Hospitality™ is not defined by luxury or a particular price point. It is about creating value that guests can recognise and feel.
A simple cottage can feel deeply considered, distinctive and worth travelling for. An expensive hotel can offer an extraordinary list of amenities and still leave a guest wondering what, exactly, made it special.
That distinction matters because price and perceived value are not the same thing. Perceived value is shaped by how relevant the stay feels, the strength of its identity, the experience it makes possible, the confidence with which it presents itself and how well the whole thing comes together.
Slow Living Hospitality™ is therefore as relevant to a one-bedroom hideaway as it is to a boutique hotel.
You don't need to be luxury to create something people value highly. You need to give the right guest a compelling reason to believe the experience is worth choosing.
-
No. Slow Living Hospitality™ isn't about slowing everything down. It is about becoming more considered in what we create and why. It doesn't mean rejecting technology, efficiency, ambition or luxury. All of those can add genuine value. Equally, so can simplicity, quiet, space, human connection and the freedom for a guest to experience a place without every moment being filled for them.
For azulomo, “slow” is about discernment: understanding what belongs, what matters to the guest, what strengthens the experience and what is simply more for the sake of more.
Sometimes the right decision is to add. Sometimes it is to simplify, protect, edit or leave something beautifully alone.
Slow isn't about doing less. It is about making what you do matter more.
-
No. There is no single azulomo look that every property should reproduce.
A Mediterranean hideaway, an English country cottage, a contemporary city hotel, a coastal guesthouse or a rural retreat should each have its own aesthetic and character. Their difference is part of their value.
For azulomo, aesthetics are an important part of the experience, but they are most powerful when they feel aligned with the identity of the stay, the character of the place, the guests it hopes to attract and how those guests want to feel while they are there. Design, materials, colour, texture, lighting, art and styling can all help create that sense of coherence and belonging.
The aim isn't to impose a particular style, but to create a place where how it looks, how it feels and what it stands for belong together. Because distinctiveness rarely comes from reproducing the same aesthetic more beautifully than everyone else. It comes from understanding what is uniquely yours and expressing it with clarity, intention and confidence.

The Slow Living Hosting Masterclass™ is where azulomo’s philosophy becomes a practical methodology for creating and growing more distinctive, valuable and memorable stays.
Created by Elke Bretz, it takes you beyond isolated hosting advice to look at the business as one connected experience: who your guests are, what they have really come to find, what your stay stands for, how you want them to feel, and how those decisions should shape everything from the property and guest experience to photography, positioning, pricing, communication, visibility and operations.
Across more than 25 self-paced modules and nine connected phases, you’ll work with selected Azulomo Signature Frameworks™, practical Companion Guides and real-world application to turn the thinking into decisions you can make for your own property or hospitality business, with the opportunity to become an Azulomo Certified Host.
The Masterclass changes the way you make hospitality decisions, connecting guest understanding, Stay Identity, experience and commercial thinking so that every decision has a clearer purpose: to create a stay that is more relevant, more distinctive, more valuable and more worth choosing.

azulomo is based in the Algarve, Portugal, while its work is created for independent hospitality businesses around the world. Portugal is a natural home for azulomo. It is a place where landscape, architecture, food, climate, community and everyday rituals are closely connected, reinforcing something central to our thinking: where we are shapes how we experience a place.
But Slow Living Hospitality™ is not defined by a destination, design style or culture. Its principles can be applied wherever hospitality exists because they begin with what is specific: the guest, the character of the property, the surrounding place and the experience being created.
Rather than prescribing a particular kind of hospitality, azulomo helps people recognise, strengthen and create greater value from what is already distinctive about their own place.
