Hosting with Purpose: The Business Value
How understanding what guests come for can bring greater meaning to the experience and clearer direction to your business.
Slow Living Hospitality™ connects guest understanding, the identity of a stay and intentional experience design with the decisions that sustain a hospitality business. For independent hosts, boutique stay owners and hospitality founders, its purpose is to make the experience more meaningful and the business behind it more considered. That begins with understanding what guests value and deciding how your stay can deliver it consistently.
Perhaps you entered hospitality because you saw something in a place: a house worth restoring, a landscape worth sharing or the possibility of welcoming people differently. Somewhere between that first idea and the daily work of hosting, the question becomes more complicated. How do you protect what makes it meaningful while ensuring the business earns enough to continue?
I see that question as central to thoughtful hospitality. Purpose needs a practical expression, and profitability needs an experience worth choosing.

Purpose becomes useful when it guides a decision
“Helping people slow down” is an appealing ambition, but it begins to guide your hospitality when you consider what a guest needs in order to feel that ease. For someone arriving after a demanding week, straightforward directions, an uncomplicated first meal and a bedroom designed for comfortable sleep may give that promise its substance. Each decision contributes to their ability to settle in, making your purpose tangible from the moment they arrive.
My work in experience design has taught me to pay close attention to this relationship between intention and reality, because the value of an idea rests in how someone experiences it. Seen through that lens, purpose helps you recognise what deserves investment, what can be simplified and where thoughtful care will make the greatest difference to the stay.
“Purpose gives a stay direction. Its value takes shape when the qualities you care about become experiences guests seek out, remember and choose to return for. That is where what makes your stay meaningful begins to strengthen the business behind it.”

Travellers are giving us reasons to look deeper
Recent research offers a useful signal. In Hilton’s global research for its 2026 Trends Report, 56% of respondents identified rest and recharging as a motivation for leisure travel.
Looking ahead, Booking.com’s 2027 Travel Predictions, published in October 2026, found that 81% of surveyed travellers would choose a destination primarily according to how they wanted to feel. The research involved 28,230 respondents across 32 countries and territories. These are stated preferences, rather than evidence of completed bookings, but they give hosts a reason to examine the emotional purpose of a visit. For me, the practical question is: what could your particular stay help someone experience?
That might be the freedom of an unscheduled day, the pleasure of discovering a place through its food or time together without the usual interruptions. Each calls for different choices. Understanding the distinction gives your hospitality direction.

Meaning needs something tangible to rest on
Consider a small rural stay whose purpose is to help guests reconnect with the surrounding place. That intention might shape breakfast ingredients, walking recommendations and relationships with local makers.
Its character develops through those connections. Guests have something specific to experience, and the host has something credible to communicate.
This is how I think about Stay Identity: the qualities of the property, place and hospitality coming together into a recognisable experience.
A useful starting point is to ask:
What do guests come here hoping to feel or experience? Look beyond broad descriptions such as “couples” or “families”.
Where does the stay deliver on that hope? Identify concrete qualities you can explain and maintain.
What does delivery require? Consider the time, cost and coordination behind the promise.
What do guests actually notice? Compare your intentions with their questions, feedback and descriptions of the visit.
The answers can reveal where your care creates value, and where effort is disappearing into details with little connection to the stay’s purpose. You may discover that a thoughtfully mapped walk becomes a highlight guests mention long after leaving, while an elaborate welcome arrangement receives little attention. Recognising that difference helps you direct your time and investment towards the qualities that give your stay meaning, strengthen its identity and make its value easier for guests to recognise.

Profit gives thoughtful hospitality room to continue
A meaningful experience still needs a viable operating model. Maintenance, fair payment for support, replacement furnishings and your own time all belong in that picture.
A locally sourced breakfast, for example, may express your connection to place beautifully. Whether it belongs in the room rate, as an optional addition or within a particular package depends on demand, cost and the work involved.
Purpose helps explain why you might offer it. Commercial judgement helps determine how you can sustain it.
There is no automatic relationship between a considered stay and higher rates, longer visits or repeat bookings. Those outcomes depend on factors including demand, location, pricing and execution. What a clear purpose offers is a stronger basis for deciding what to test and what to measure. You can then examine whether an improvement changes relevant feedback, booking decisions or delivery costs, rather than assuming that something meaningful must also be profitable.

Build something you can keep believing in
The most rewarding version of your stay may become clearer when you understand which qualities matter deeply to guests and which commitments you can sustain. That clarity gives you permission to be more deliberate. You can invest in the experience that gives the place its character, explain its value with confidence and question additions that create work without strengthening the whole.
Before your next hosting decision, ask: does this strengthen what guests come here for, and can we deliver it well over time? Holding both questions together is where purpose begins to shape a more enduring business.
