So, What Is azulomo?
azulomo is the home of Slow Living Hospitality™, a philosophy and methodology created by founder Elke Bretz. Shaped by more than twenty years in experience design and behavioural thinking, it helps independent hosts and hospitality businesses understand what makes their stay genuinely valuable, then turn that understanding into a more distinctive experience and stronger business.
I get asked what azulomo is quite a lot, and for a while I gave very long answers. Experience design, hospitality, interiors, guest psychology, slow living, commercial thinking, place. Somewhere around minute three, I could usually see that I'd rather lost the person who asked.
The better answer starts with something I couldn't stop noticing: there are an awful lot of wonderful properties with far more potential than they realise. Beautiful places created by thoughtful people. Money invested in interiors, photography and amenities. Hosts working incredibly hard to create something guests will love. And yet sometimes something still doesn't quite connect. The property is beautiful but difficult to distinguish from the next beautiful property. The listing tells us everything it has without really giving us a reason to want it.
Why this stay? For whom? And why should they care? That's the problem I became fascinated by.
The tiny pot of jam problem
Oddly enough, I sometimes think about this in terms of hotel breakfast. You know the one. Breakfast arrives with three miniature jars of jam, two types of butter, four teas, coffee, juice and perhaps something involving chia seeds. It's generous and thoughtful, but what if all you really wanted was excellent coffee, warm bread and twenty quiet minutes looking out of the window?
Hospitality has become extraordinarily good at adding. More amenities, more welcome gifts, more technology, more experiences. Yet some of the stays Craig and I remember most gave us remarkably little. They simply seemed to understand what actually mattered.
And commercially, that matters too. Because adding more costs money. Understanding what people genuinely value can change where that money is spent, what gets communicated and ultimately what someone feels a stay is worth.
What if better hospitality isn't always about offering more, but understanding more deeply what is worth offering in the first place? That, really, is where azulomo began.

I came to hospitality sideways
Perhaps that's important. For more than twenty years, I worked in experience design and behavioural thinking, trying to understand something surprisingly difficult: human beings. Why do we choose one thing and ignore another? What creates trust? What creates friction? Why does something feel worth paying for? And what makes people act, return or walk away?
Eventually, I started asking similar questions about hospitality. Why do we describe properties by counting bedrooms and amenities when people aren't really travelling for bedrooms and amenities? Why do so many beautiful stays become almost interchangeable online? Why does luxury so often mean more, when sometimes the greatest luxury is, well, being wonderfully left alone?
And when bookings aren't coming, why do we so quickly change the price, photography or promotion before asking whether people can actually understand why this particular stay is worth choosing? That was the shift for me.
Some of the most commercially valuable things in hospitality aren’t really things at all. They’re relevance, desire, trust, feeling, freedom, belonging, a sense of possibility and that wonderfully instinctive reaction: that’s the one.

The guest isn't buying the terrace
A terrace is square metres, furniture and perhaps a lovely view. But someone may be choosing breakfast stretching until lunchtime. A remote cottage might mean nobody being able to reach them for two days. A beautiful bedroom might really offer that moment when they put their bag down and feel their shoulders drop.
Once you start thinking this way, the question changes from What does this property have? to What does being here make possible, and who will value that most?
That changes more than the guest experience. It can change what you invest in, what you photograph, what you say, who you market to and how confidently you communicate value.
“That meeting point between Guest Fit, Place and Stay Identity is where I believe an enormous amount of untapped commercial value sits.”
But the property has a voice in this too. I don't want every rural stay becoming the same version of tranquillity or every Mediterranean property arriving at linen, limewash and the inevitable olive branch. A great stay needs to understand who it is as much as who it is for. It's a thread I follow much further in The Slow Living Hosting Masterclass™, because what appears ordinary to the person who sees a property every day can sometimes hold the beginnings of what makes it extraordinary to someone else.

This is what I mean by “slow”
The word slow can be misleading. It conjures linen curtains, long lunches and someone wandering barefoot through an olive grove. All lovely, and I'm certainly not objecting, but Slow Living Hospitality™ means something more useful to me.
Slow is a quality of attention. It's understanding the guest before writing the listing. Knowing what the stay stands for before photographing it. Looking for the deeper reason something isn't converting before discounting it. Noticing what is already distinctive before spending money redesigning it into whatever happens to be fashionable.
Slow doesn't mean taking longer or thinking smaller. It means not rushing past the thinking that makes everything afterwards clearer and more commercially effective.
That clarity can be transformational. A beautiful but generic property can develop a recognisable identity. A stay attracting the wrong guests can become more relevant to the right ones. Marketing can move from describing features to creating desire. Pricing can be supported by stronger perceived value rather than constant comparison. And a business dependent on platforms and discounts can begin building stronger foundations for direct demand, recommendation and return.
That's the work I'm interested in. Not simply creating nicer stays, but turning deeper understanding into better hospitality decisions and better commercial outcomes.

Who I created azulomo for
azulomo is for the independent host who knows their property has more potential but can't quite see what is missing. The boutique hotel or guesthouse that is beautifully put together but struggles to articulate why it is genuinely different. The micro-resort owner or next-generation hospitality founder who wants to create something with character and commercial intelligence rather than another polished version of what already exists.
Often, these are people already doing an enormous amount. They've improved the rooms, changed the photography, adjusted the price, added amenities, posted more and watched competitors, yet the results still don't quite reflect the quality of what they've created.
Sometimes they don't need another tactic. They need a stronger foundation: greater clarity about who they're for, what they stand for, what their guests genuinely value and how to turn that difference into perceived and commercial value.
__
That's why I created the Masterclass
The Slow Living Hosting Masterclass™ is where all of this becomes practical.
I created it to take the thinking, research and proprietary frameworks behind Slow Living Hospitality™ and turn them into a methodology hosts can apply to their own property and business.
We start further back than marketing tactics. You'll understand your Guest Fit and what your guests are really seeking, uncover a stronger Stay Identity, examine the experience through their eyes and diagnose where friction, weak differentiation or lost perceived value may be holding the business back. Then we carry that clarity into the decisions that affect performance: the property, experience, photography, listing, direct website, communication, pricing, operations, visibility and growth.
The transformation I'm interested in is from a property containing lots of good things to a distinctive hospitality business where the right things work together, and where guests can see why that difference is worth choosing.
Because when the difference becomes clearer, photography has something meaningful to show. Marketing has something specific to say. The right guest has a stronger reason to choose. Pricing has more than a list of amenities to defend it. And the business has a stronger foundation for conversion, longer stays, direct demand, recommendation and return.
That's where human feeling becomes commercial intelligence.

So, what is azulomo?
Perhaps azulomo is ultimately a different lens through which to see your hospitality business.
Instead of only asking what a property has, we ask what being there makes possible. Instead of trying to appeal to everyone, we ask who will value it most and why. Instead of asking whether the interiors are beautiful, we consider whether they strengthen the experience and perceived value. Instead of automatically adding something new, we ask whether it genuinely deserves the investment. And rather than beginning with How do we get more bookings?, perhaps we begin one step earlier: Have we created something people have a meaningful reason to choose, value and return to?
That way of seeing became Slow Living Hospitality™.
And The Slow Living Hosting Masterclass™ is where I teach you how to put it into practice, moving from Guest Fit and Stay Identity through experience and perceived value to the commercial decisions that shape a stronger hospitality business.
Because underneath everything we're building at azulomo is one belief I've carried with me: When you understand more deeply what people value, you make better decisions about what to create, where to invest and how to grow.
That's where the transformation begins.
See more clearly. Create more intentionally. Build greater value.
